The encoded gene product is responsible for catabolism of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) a mostly inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system into succinic semialdehyde. Deficiency of this encoded protein includes psychomotor retardation hypotonia hyperreflexia lethargy refractory seizures and EEG abnormalities.
